Hi, I’m Matt Hayward an artist based out of San Diego California where I create paintings in my garage studio. My works fuse ocean themes both above and below water, vibrant colors, with elements of a street style. I typically use canvas as my painting surface but have recently been working on larger mural projects around the city.
The ocean has always been a huge part of my life and is the consistent theme in my works. Growing up in So Cal only 15 minutes inland from the coast I made frequent surf trips to the beach and eventually moved to San Diego for college. I spent much of my free time surfing San Diego’s coastline and enjoying the beach life. Currently I invest much of my free time fishing these waters and have become a fanatic of our local fishery. My art work focuses on the magic of the ocean, its creatures and its mystique as seen through my own eyes.
My art also has a street style to it. Growing up riding my skateboard around the outskirts of LA I was intrigued by the artwork displayed around the city. Back in the 1980-1990’s skateboarding wasn’t as accepted as it is today so it was common to spend time in riverbeds and tunnels. The walls of these desolate areas were often decorated in layers of graffiti. This artwork spoke to me it’s bright colors, clean lines and bold curves helped to develop my taste for artistic style.
I am a self taught artist who has learned from my own experiences and failures. The progression of my work over time fueled me. I never had any intentions on being an “artist”, rather it just felt good to paint. While most of my audience only witness the finished project the process of creating is my true joy! My studio in San Diego is always open by appointment. Schedule an appointment with the artist.
